Callum Elder is hopeful that his latest injury setback won’t cost him an global call-up following the nomination of Hull City’s left-back for their World Cup qualifiers next month in Australia’s provisional squad.

Elder missed Saturday’s 3-0 win over the Tigers to Luton Town with a calf strain that he endured seven days previously during his debut against Wigan Athletic.

When Grant McCann’s side chase back-to-back victories against Cardiff next weekend, the 24-year-old will again be missing, but he has now added motivation to rapidly recover.

Along with team-mate Jackson Irvine, Elder has been selected in a provisional squad for Australia’s World Cup qualifiers against Nepal and Chinese Taipei next month.

That could feasibly bring his first senior cap and Elder will hope to get the chance to prove his fitness either against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday week or away to Huddersfield Town four days later.
