Michael Sam made international headlines eight years ago when he was selected as the first openly gay NFL player.

However, he quit football after being released by two NFL teams and retiring from a CFL team for what he cited as mental health issues.

Sam’s story will be updated in Sunday’s Sports Center “SC Featured” segment, which will be presented by reporter Chris Connelly. Sam is back playing for the Barcelona Dragons in the European League of Football (ELF). Sam and Connelly met in Spain to talk about Sam’s life after football and his desire to play the game again.

“Michael Sam: The Unfinished Story,” produced by Daniela Marulanda, will debut in the 8 a.m. ET hour of SportsCenter on Sunday, Aug. 7, and will re-air in other editions afterward.
